What's New

New For June 2013

During Semester 2, students from twelve Foundations classes participated in the ADMC Reading Programme. This involved reading graded readers and completing an online quiz. On Tuesday 4th June, a ceremony was held to celebrate the winners. We would like to thank the participating teachers and students for making the programme a success.
Board games have been placed on top of the periodicals shelves next to the Gaming Area. These are for students to use as they wish. Faculty are encouraged to spread the word to their students that the games are free for them to use for fun.  A huge thank you to Elizabeth Rainey for donating these board games.

A “Student Book Collection” of stories students have written, is being created at ADMC Library.  Two students have submitted their publications so far and they are now on display on top of the Reference shelves. Please encourage any students to submit any books they may have written.  These will be added to the display immediately. At the end of the semester, these student works will be added to the Library Collection.

Due to student demand, the Library has extended its opening hours on all open days.  Therefore, until Thursday June 20th the Library Opening Hours will be:
Sunday to Thursday: 7.30 am-12 midnight
Friday: Closed
Saturday: 9 am-12 midnight.
As part of our efforts to go green, new printing software has been installed on the computers in the Library and the ILC.  Students will have to type in their student number and password every time they want to print.

New Reading Programs
Two new reading programs, Scholastic Reading Counts and Moodle Reader, are being trialed in Semester 2, 2013. Scholastic Reading Counts was first piloted in 2012. The aim of these programs is to motivate
students to become independent readers and to improve their English skills through reading for pleasure.
Both programs require participating students to read as many books as possible and complete an online quiz after each book. Ten classes from Foundation Levels 2 and 3 will be participating over the semester.
To motivate the students further, there will be a competitive element to the program.  At the end of Semester 2, the individual and class that have the highest word count will be presented with a shield or trophy from their Head of Department.
If faculty are interested in participating in our reading programs, please contact Louise Sikkens (ILC Librarian) at extension 139.
We look forward to seeing the ADMC students reading!

Oxford Bookworms
is the newest database addition to over 90 HCT databases available to all HCT faculty and students.  It is a seven-stage graded readers series offering over 200 adapted and original English texts for secondary and adult students.  Oxford Bookworms enjoy a world-wide reputation for high-quality storytelling and a great reading experience.   Research shows reading a lot improves all your language skills.   Experts recognize Oxford Bookworms as the most consistent series in terms of language control, length, and quality of story - very important for fluent reading and extensive reading.

There's a wide choice of titles too - something for everyone.
The database of readers will be available from 1 March, just in time for library week.  Check out our library databases.

OUP titles via BlackBoard Mobile Learn iPad App
For this semester, ADMC Foundations Faculty and students will be accessing their Oxford University Press e-textbooks via BlackBoard Learn, as opposed to the complicated process of using codes via Vitalsource as was used last semester. At the moment ADMC is the only college trialing this method. It should work well, but if any problems are experienced, please contact Suparna and Tariq in Ed. Tech., or Stephen in the Library.

Starbucks

Not that new in the Library, but a freshly brewed cup of coffee is.  You can enjoy the creations that the crew at our own Starbucks make every hour from 8 in the morning to 5 in the afternoon. For a perfect day, contact the crew at extension 493, or visit Starbucks in the Library & Learning Centre.
